The Redwood Freshman Baseball team notched their second straight five inning 10 to 0 shutout tonight vs. Drake High School, keeping their 2016 overall record perfect at 9 and 0. Kyle Felder started on the hill and continued his dominant season. Felder used his curve ball and consistent location around the strike zone to earn him his second straight shutout. The Giants defense was error free. Zack Gordon absorbed the bulk of Drake’s offensive efforts at shortstop.
Offensively, once again, the Giants wasted no time and opened the bottom half of the first inning with Jack Morken taking an outside pitch to deep right field, tripling home Kyle Felder and Robbie Wilson. 2-0 after one.
Consistent pitching by Felder kept Drake off the scoreboard in the top of the second. In the bottom half, catcher Jake Nordstrom and third basemen Jackson Barry each singled. Second baseman, Genki LeClaire, then drove the ball through the second baseman’s legs, scoring Jake Nordstrom (3-0). After, Robbie Wilson pounded out a double to score Genki LeClaire and Zack Gordon (5-0). Another hard hit line drive by Jack Morken right at the short stop ended the bottom half of the second inning, 5-0 giants after two innings.
The top half of the third inning showcased Redwoods stingy defense with infielders Jackson Barry and Zack Gordon and outfielder Jack Morken quickly disposing of the Pirate hitters.
The bottom half of the third inning started with a bomb to left field from Enzo Santa. After his lead off double, Enzo was caught in a rundown between second and third, zigzagging back and forth before getting tagged out at third. Jackson Barry and Jake Nordstrom followed up with back to back singles. After a passed ball behind home plate, both runners advanced. Zack Gordon then put the game out of reach with a two out single, scoring Barry and Nordstrom (7-0). Gordon would make his way around the bases to score the Giants eighth run, sliding under the tag at home. 8-0 Giants after three innings.
Ryan Jessen entered the game in the fourth inning and immediately contributed with a hard hit ball down the third base line. Morken was then walked and made his way to third after a second passed ball behind home plate. Morken would later score after another Pirate error (9-0). Jared Robinow finished off the Pirates after tagging up at third after another Jackson Barry hit to right field. 10 to 0 Giants after four innings.
Bryce Jehling and Thomas Durtchi entered the game in the top of the fifth inning, both securing the final two outs of the game respectively. Final score: Giants 10, Drake 0.
