On May 12, the boys’ varsity baseball team faced off against the six-seeded San Rafael Bulldogs in the first round of the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) Playoffs. The Giants faced the Bulldogs twice earlier in the regular season, splitting the series. However, entering as the third seed with a 14-8-1 record to the Bulldogs’ 13-13 record, the Giants were favored to win. After a slow start offensively, the Giants broke through in the sixth inning with their first hit of the game. Following a stolen base and another base hit by junior Theo Throno, senior Sam Gersch brought in the first run of the ball game with a sacrifice fly adding to his team leading 19 runs batted in.  The Giants followed this victory by scoring two more runs on another base hit by junior Chase Johnson and a bunt by senior Miles Harrison. With a three-run lead going into the final two innings, the Giants brought in senior star pitcher Matthew Knauer who came into the game with a 1.78 earned runs average, one of the lowest in all of MCAL. Upon coming in Knauer was able to close out the game quickly, securing the win and Redwood’s spot in the next round. They will face the two-seeded rival Tamalpais Hawks on May 14 in the MCAL semifinals in Mill Valley.
