On Tuesday, May 6, boys’ varsity baseball faced off against their Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) foes, the Branson Bulls, in a highly anticipated home regular season finale, where the Giants got a chance to commemorate their seniors one last time at Moody Field. Redwood headed into the game with a comfortable record of 13-8-1, sitting in 3rd place in MCALs, while Branson was 8-14 with a forgettable 2-13 record in league, placing them dead last. Nevertheless, the Bulls have competed with the MCAL powerhouse in recent history, defeating the Giants in the 2023 season and barely succumbing to them in their 2024 championship season.
On the mound for Redwood was junior Jack Moseley, one of the most impactful players on both offense and defense for the Giants this season. Despite Branson’s season struggles, the Bulls jumped out to a very early 2-0 lead in the first inning, with a two-run single that gave the visiting fans a jolt of energy they might not have expected. However, this high didn’t last long for the Bulls, as senior outfielder and Middlebury baseball commit Sam Gersch belted a deep solo home run to right field to get Redwood on the board in just their second at-bat.
The Giants were able to tack on one more run to tie things up off a single by sophomore Chase Johnson, bringing in Moseley to score. From there on, Redwood took control of the game, shutting down the Branson offense. Moseley lasted two and a third innings before he was relieved by senior Jack Gurley, who struck out four batters in two and a third more innings.
Junior Jake Post stepped in in the fifth inning, pitching a scoreless inning, and senior Matthew Knauer let up one run in the last inning of the game. RBIs from seniors Miles Harrison, TJ Beck and junior Theo Trono allowed Redwood to come out victorious 6-3 in a heartfelt win to send off their cherished seniors. The Giants’ next game is their first-round MCAL playoff matchup. They will host the winner of Archie Williams and San Rafael on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
